Vitesse Arnhem is out of the Europa League after a 1-0 defeat to FC Basel on Thursday. The Swiss side progressed 2-0 on aggregate.

With Basel coming away from Arnhem with a 1-0 win, Thursday’s second leg was always going to be a difficult task for Leonid Slutsky’s men. That task was made impossible on 27 minutes when Jake Clarke-Salter saw a straight red for a high challenge on Albian Ajeti.

Two minutes after the red, Basel took the lead with Ajeti left unmarked to head in a corner. The striker then missed a great chance to make it 2-0 before the break as Basel continued to dominate.

In the second half, Vitesse continued to fight but it was difficult with a man less and Basel should have scored more with Ricky van Wolfswinkel denied by Eduardo.

Basel comfortably saw out a 1-0 win and progress to the next round. Vitesse are now out of Europe and must pick themselves up for the clash with Heerenveen at the weekend.
