Peter Bosz once again trusted 18-year-old Kasper Dolberg to lead the line and the Dane paid back his coaches faith with the only goal of the game on 28 minutes. The youngster raced onto a pass from Bertrand Traore before sliding a shot perfectly into the bottom corner.
Ajax could have doubled their lead before the break when Dolberg was once again set up in front of goal, but instead of shooting he decided to pass the ball to Davy Klaassen, and a Standard defender managed to intercept.
In the second half, Ajax continued to push forward but they couldn’t find a decisive second goal and goalkeeper Andre Onana had to twice prevent Standard from equalising as the visitors became more dangerous. With five minutes left, Onana was finally beaten by Isaac Mbenza but the post came to Ajax’s rescue and the game finished 1-0.
Ajax remain at the top of the group with six points while Celta Vigo are second after beating Panathinaikos 2-0.
