Feyenoord have been unstoppable in the league so far this season with seven wins out of seven, but Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side looked a shadow of themselves in Turkey as Fenerbahce were allowed control of the game from the start.
Dirk Kuyt, playing against his former side, sloppily gave away possession on 18 minutes which led to Emmanuel Emenike firing past Brad Jones from a difficult angle for what proved to be the only goal of the game.
The scoreline could have been greater but Fenerbahce passed up several chances with Brad Jones saving well from Moussa Sow while Jeremain Lens fired an excellent chance wide in the second half. Feyenoord’s only real chance for an equaliser fell to Nicolai Jorgensen but the Dane’s lob lacked power and direction.
Dick Advocaat gave Robin van Persie a late run out against his former side as Fenerbahce comfortably saw out the game and condemned Feyenoord to their first defeat of this campaign. Fenerbahce are now top of the group with four points, while Manchester United join Feyenoord on three after their 1-0 win over Zorya.
