It was a bad week for Dutch clubs in the Europa League as both AZ Alkmaar and NEC Nijmegen were defeated.

Sunderland 1-0 AZ Alkmaar

A second half penalty was enough for Sunderland to defeat NEC.

AZ got the first major chance of the game when Ro-Zangelo Daal was played in on goal but the winger was denied by Robin Roefs. The home side then took charge but AZ managed to keep it at 0-0 going into the break.

Early in the second half, AZ got another huge chance through Kees Smit, but after some wonderful skill the midfielder put the ball just wide.

Sunderland were then awarded a penalty for a trip by Wesley Patati and Enzo Le Fee made it 1-0 from the spot.

Before the end, both Daal and Mexx Meerdink went close to an equaliser but Sunderland held on for the victory.

Juventus 5-0 NEC Nijmegen

NEC Nijmegen were no match for Italian giants Juventus in Turin.

After only nine minutes, the hosts had the lead when NEC goalkeeper Nikolas Polster made a big error which allowed Nico Gonzalez an empty net to score.

Kerim Alajbegovic doubled the lead before Almugera Kabar brought down González and Nick Woltemade made it 3-0 from the spot.

In the second half, the tempo went down as Juventus looked to save energy but they still managed to add goals from Zeki Celik and Randal Kolo Muani.

A bruising night for NEC, who face Levski Sofia after the international break.
