Vitesse Arnhem were made to rue missed chances as Ricky van Wolfswinkel fired FC Basel to a late 1-0 win in the first leg of their third-round qualifier.

The home side took the initiative from the start and were unlucky not to be ahead in the first two minutes with Tim Matavz shooting straight at goalkeeper Jonas Omlin after a good cross by Alexnder Buttner.

Vitesse pushed FC Basel back but couldn’t turn their dominance into a lead at the break with Matavz once again going close with a header. At the other end, Basel were quiet but got one good chance that Albian Ajeti fired into the side-netting.

In the second half, Vitesse struggled to create chances and Basel grew more and more into the game. Ricky van Wolfswinkel missed a decent chance while0 Luca Zuffi scooped a free-kick wide.

It appeared that Vitesse were going to take a 0-0 draw to Switzerland next week but in the 92nd minute, Van Wolfswinkel raced in on goal and hammered a strike past Eduardo to seal a win for Basel. The striker, who was a hero for Vitesse in two spells for the club, has put a major dent in the club’s chances of progressing.
