The Dutch side went into the game needing a victory to keep alive their slim hopes of snatching a top two place in the group but fell behind in the third minute. A corner kick was headed towards goal by Marvin Baudry and Fankaty Dabo helped it into his own net on the goal line.
Zulte then hit the post through Onur Kaya, but in the 22nd minute, Vitesse were handed a big advantage when Kingsley Madu saw red for his second yellow card. With the man advantage, Vitesse took control and created several chances before the break but Mason Mount and Milot Rashica both hit the woodwork, while the latter also went close with two strikes.
Six minutes after the break, Alexander Buttner was shown his second yellow card to also reduce Vitesse to ten men and ruin their chances of a comeback. With 20 minutes to go, Kaya fired past Remko Pasveer to seal the Belgians victory.
Vitesse remain bottom of the table with one point and five behind Nice in second with only two games left. The Arnhem side need to win their next two games and hope for a miracle to reach the knock-out round.
