After the defeat to Lazio in the first group game, Vitesse went looking for an unlikely win in France against the side that ended Ajax’s Champions League hopes. Vitesse started well but were restricted to long range efforts from Milot Rashica, Navarone Foor and Tim Matavz, all of which didn’t trouble Yoan Cardinale in the Nice goal.
On 16 minutes, the home side took the lead with their first real chance. A corner was headed into the path of Alassane Plea by Dante and the Nice forward made no mistake with a finish past Remko Pasveer. Just before the break, Les Aiglons doubled the lead through Allan Saint-Maximin, who took advantage of Thulani Serero’s loss of possession before finishing into the bottom corner.
The second half was delayed by fifteen minutes after the stadium lights in Allianz Riviera stopped working. When the play did get back underway, Vitesse went close to getting back into the game when Thomas Bruns free kick came back off the post.
Ten minutes before the end, Plea got his second goal of the game to end Vitesse’s hopes of a comeback. The Dutch side now have zero points after two games and progression to the next round now looks very unlikely. Next up for Henk Fraser’s side is Zulte Waregem.
