Ajax and PSV Eindhoven qualifying for the Champions League group stages this week has been excellent for Netherlands coefficient which has taken a hit in recent years.

Netherlands went into the season sitting thirteenth which meant no automatic qualifier for the Champions League or Europa League. Vitesse, AZ Alkmaar and Feyenoord have all failed in the Europa League qualifiers, but Ajax and PSV have done the nation proud in reaching the Champions League group stages.

The two club’s success so far means that Netherlands have risen above Austria and Denmark into 11th spot and if they maintain that position they will be almost assured of an automatic Champions League spot in the 2020/21 season. Currently, the top ten nations are assured of a spot in the Champions League, but if the winner comes from one of those nations, the 11th spot gets one.

Austria (12th) and Denmark (13th) have had difficult campaigns in Europe so far with neither nation having a club in the Champions League. The biggest competition for Netherlands may come from Greece, who have AEK Athens in the Champions League, while Olympiakos and PAOK are in the Europa League.
