Excelsior moved three points clear of the drop zone after a slim 1-0 victory over Vitesse Arnhem.

While Vitesse may have one eye on the KNVB Cup final in two weeks, Excelsior are fully concentrating on their fight against relegation and the need to pick up points in their last four games.

After only 13 minutes, Mike van Duinen picked out Nigel Hasselbaink to fire into the top corner and put Excelsior ahead.

Vitesse searched for the equaliser before the break but Guram Kashia headed straight at Warner Hahn while Lewis Baker and Alexander Buttner passed up decent opportunities. At the other end, Eloy Room denied Hasselbaink a second goal.

In the second half, Vitesse were the stronger side but Milot Rashica and substitute Yuning Zhang were among those that were unable to take their chances and the hosts held on for the win.

Excelsior now move onto 31 points and three above the drop zone. Vitesse stay in 5th.
