The away side tasted defeat for the first time this season last weekend when they were soundly beaten 4-0 by PSV, and during the first half against Excelsior they were a shadow of the team that started their campaign so well.
Excelsior took control of the match from the start and deservedly had the lead on 22 minutes with Tom van Weert slotting into an empty net after being played in by Khalid Karami.
The home side should have moved further in front before the break but Jeff Stans, Rick Kruys and Jordan Botaka all missed great chances to score. Stans thought he had found Excelsiot’s 2nd goal after half time but the referee disallowed the goal for offside against Van Weert.
Cambuur made Excelsior pay for their missed chances when they drew level on 62 minutes through Bartholomew Ogbeche, who saw his first effort saved by Coutinho, but he was on hand to tap in the rebound. It was the away side who should have won the game in the end with Martijn Barto striking the post, while Michiel Hemmen headed just wide.
Excelsior sit 10th after the draw, while Cambuur climb to 5th with 12 points.
