Excelsior failed to move themselves further away from the drop zone as they were held to a draw by Go Ahead Eagles.

Go Ahead Eagles came into the game bottom and still looking for their first away win of the season but after only ten minutes they led through Pedro Chirivella. The Liverpool loanee nodded in Jarchinio Antonia’s cross for his first goal in Dutch football.

The goal woke the hosts up and they deservedly equalised just before the half hour mark when Kevin Vermeuelen burst down the right before picking out Nigel Hasselbaink at the far post for an easy tap-in.

In the second half both sides had chances to earn a much-needed victory with Elvis Manu firing wide for the visitors, while Theo Zwarthoed had to be at full stretch to save Terell Ondaan’s free kick. In the end both teams had to settle for a point which moves Go Ahead above Roda JC into 17th while Excelsior remain in 14th.
