Excelsior went into the match on a three-game unbeaten run and took the lead on 23 minutes when Tom van Weert slotted into an empty net after Luigi Bruins shot came back off the post.
The home side’s lead lasted only ten minutes though as Excelsior equalised in bizarre fashion. Winger Kristoffer Peterson cross was too low for Mark van der Maarel to head an effort on goal, but the defender sent the ball into the corner with his chest.
Both teams went on the attack in the second half, and it was Utrecht who finally took the lead on 84 minutes as Yassine Ayoub’s cross was headed past Coutinho by Christian Kum.
Last week Carlo de Reuver earned Excelsior a draw against AZ with five minutes to go, and the attacker was once again the hero when he slammed into net from close ranger after a pinpoint cross from Ninos Gouriye.
The point sees Utrecht sit 7th while Excelsior are 13th.
