A penalty in injury time handed Excelsior their first win of the season as they saw off Go Ahead Eagles 3-2 in Rotterdam.

goexExcelsior had the lead after only 20 minutes when Jordan Botaka cheekily back-heeled the ball past a stranded Erik Cummings and into the net.

Botaka nearly made it 2-0 soon after but his strike came back off the post, while at the other end Deniz Turuc had an effort cleared off the line.

The home side doubled their lead just before the hour mark when Daryl van Mieghem cut inside from the left before sending a strike into the bottom corner from the edge of the box.

Go Ahead Eagles then mounted a comeback with goalkeeper Cummings extraordinarily finding the net with a long ball forward which bounced over the head of Jordy Deckers and into the net to make it 2-1 on 69 minutes. Minutes later Sven Nieuwpoort found the equaliser for Go Ahead, and it seemed the game was heading for a draw.

However deep into injury time Excelsior were awarded a penalty after a handball in the box, and Sander Fischer made no mistake from the spot to win all three points for the hosts.

It is a great result for Excelsior, who built on their draw last week, while Go Ahead Eagles now have two defeats out of two.
