Excelsior came from behind to record a 3-2 win over local rivals Sparta Rotterdam.

exce-jfThe visitors went into the game full of confidence on the back of a 3-1 win over Heerenveen before the winter break and they seemed on course for another good result when Luis Brogno tapped in from close range on 22 minutes.

However, the lead only lasted four minutes before Stanley Albers drew Excelsior level with a fine volley from Khalid Karimi’s cross. On the half hour mark, Fredy Ribeiro capitalised on poor defending from Sparta to turn the game on its head and put Excelsior ahead.

On 65 minutes a foul on Hicham Faik earned Excelsior a penalty, which Nigel Hasselbaink netted to make it 3-1. Denzel Dumfries pulled one back for Sparta to give the visitors hope, but Excelsior held on to claim three points.

The win lifts the hosts to 14th while Sparta drop to 9th.
