Excelsior have finally recorded their first victory since November with a comfortable win over Heerenveen.

Excelsior gained a precious point at AZ Alkmaar last weekend and their confidence was clearly on show against Heerenveen as they eased to a win over the Frisians.

After fifteen minutes Stanley Elbers beat Erwin Mulder from an acute angle to make it 1-0 and just before the break,  Jurgen Mattheij nodded in a second from a corner. Three minutes into the second half, Milan Massop latched onto a Mike van Duinen lay-off before firing in Excelsior’s third.

With 13 minutes to go, Luciano Slagveer pulled one back for Heerenveen but there was to be no comeback as Nigel Hasselbaink shrugged off two defenders before racing through on goal and slotting in Excelsior’s fourth.

The win lifts Excelsior to 15th while Heerenveen are eighth.
