After five straight losses, Excelsior returned to winning ways on Sunday with a 2-0 victory over Groningen in Rotterdam.

Groningen headed to Rotterdam with some confidence after holding PSV to a 3-3 draw in midweek, but they found themselves behind on eight minutes when Milan Massop netted from a Hicham Faik free-kick.

Groningen searched for the equaliser before the break but Django Warmerdam fired inches wide while Lars Veldwijk hit the post on two separate occasions.

Veldwijk went close again in the second-half with a header that flew into the arms of Theo Zwarthoed, while at the other end, Faik had a powerful effort kept out by Sergio Padt.

In the 83rd minute, Excelsior sealed the victory when Stanley Elbers tapped in a Massop cross. Excelsior move to 11th with the win while Groningen sit 13th.
