Excelsior Rotterdam defeated Vitesse Arnhem 2-0 on Saturday evening to climb up to seventh in the table.

The hosts were the better side from the start and hit the post after half an hour through Jerdy Schouten before Jurgen Mattheij had a goal disallowed for offside. Eventually, Excelsior found their opener in the 40th minute when a free-kick was diverted past his own goalkeeper by Max Clark.

Vitesse came out stronger in the second half but the post denied Bryan Linssen before Sonny Stevens made a good save to deny Oussama Darfalou’s header.

In the 70th minute, Excelsior sealed their victory when Mattheij fired past Eduardo from outside the box. In injury time, Stevens was sent off for bringing down Roy Beerens in the box but substitute goalkeeper Alessandro Damen kept out Darfalou’s spot kick to confirm a miserable evening for Vitesse.

Excelsior now rises to seventh and one spot behind Vitesse.
