Speaking at a New Year’s reception, Excelsior chairman Albert de Jong laid out his vision for the club in the short to medium term. During this speech, De Jong talked about transfers and he admitted it was his ambition to re-sign Robin van Persie to help the club compete with the top three of Ajax, PSV and Feyenoord.

De Jong told the club faithful, “He [Robin van Persie] is considering a return to the Netherlands and Feyenoord and Excelsior are the teams where he would like to play for. That is our challenge!”

He continued to talk about the effect that Van Persie would have on the club adding, “If Van Persie arrives here [signs for Excelsior], we have to play in the league, plus we have enough for a place on the podium and especially … working together, moving forward together to help the club!”

Excelsior recently posted strong financial numbers and De Jong wants to reinvest in the squad to attract high calibre players such as Van Persie to Excelsior Rotterdam.

Confirmed his intent De Jong said “Financially, Excelsior goes well. In the coming year, we expect a budget that goes towards the € 6.5 million. An increase that should give us more spending power in many areas.”

Whether Robin van Persie would consider Excelsior a viable option at this stage of his career is debatable.
