The hosts went into the game without Samuel Armenteros who is nearing a move away from the club. However, Heracles still have Brandley Kuwas and the winger opened the scoring after only 13 minutes with a stunning strike into the top corner.
Excelsior hit back quickly through Luigi Bruins who cut in from the left before firing a low strike past a surprised Bram Castro on 16 minutes.
Heracles were on top after the equaliser but had to wait until 52 minutes to regain their lead with Paul Gladon judging a long ball over the top before looping his strike past goalkeeper Alessandro Damen. Once again, the lead was short lived before Jinty Caenepeel scored his first Eredivisie goal to level the score.
Neither side could find a winning goal but in injury time Excelsior were reduced to ten men with Anouar Hadouir seeing red for a bad tackle on Tim Breukers.
Heracles have five points from their opening three games, while Excelsior have four.
