Excelsior have moved away from the bottom three after defeating De Graafschap 2-0 in Rotterdam.

De Graafschap made a perfect start to 2019 when they hammered Fortuna Sittard last weekend, but they could not repeat that performance in Rotterdam.

The game was a poor spectacle in the first half with De Graafschap midfielder Youssef El Jebli’s shot over the bar the closest either side went.

Fifteen minutes from time, Excelsior broke the deadlock when Luigi Bruins outwitted goalkeeper Hidde Jurjus with a strike into the bottom corner. Then in injury time, veteran striker Mounir El Hamdaoui wrapped up the victory.

The three points moves Excelsior into 14th spot, while De Graafschap are still bottom of the table.
