excelsior upRKC Waalwijk started the second second leg of the final 2-0 down after the first leg and faced a huge mountain to climb at the Mandemakers Stadion.

The task got harder for the Eredivisie side, as goals from Lars Veldijk and Sander Fischer put Excelsior 2-0 up in the opening 25 minutes. However RKC fought back, leveling it at 2-2 before the break thanks to Jean-David Beauguel’s header, and a great strike from Peter Jungschlager.

In the second half, RKC pushed forward in droves, but Evander Sno, Romeo Castelen, and Aureliem Joachim were all guilty of missing good chances. Excelsior held on until the final whistle, which was met by jubilant celebrations from their traveling support.

Excelsior climb to the Eredivisie for the first time since the 11/12 season, when they finished bottom of the table, and can look forward to a Rotterdam derby with Feyenoord again. RKC have now suffered their third relegation in the last seven years, and they join fellow Eredivisie clubs NEC and Roda JC in the second tier next season.
