After five years in the Eredivisie, Excelsior went into Wednesday’s clash needing to overturn a 2-1 deficit from the first-leg.
Excelsior failed to take control from the start and in the 38th minute, Stijn Spierings headed the visitors in front.
Early in the second half, Elías Már Ómarsson equalised with a nice finish off the bottom of the bar. Excelsior were then given an advantage with Spierings shown his second yellow card in the 70th minute.
Excelsior should have found the winning goal with a man extra but it was RKC who had the better chances to win the game. However, in the end it didn’t matter as RKC held on to seal their place in the playoff final.
Excelsior will now return to the Keuken Kampioen Divisie, while RKC will face Go Ahead Eagles in the playoff final.
Go Ahead Eagles headed to Den Bosch with the score at 2-2 from the first leg. It seemed Den Bosch were holding on for a 0-0 draw but in the 88th minute, Jeroen Veldmate netted the winner.
