Excelsior have strengthened their midfield with the signing of Ali Messaoud.

The 26-year-old spent the last six months on loan with NEC Nijmegen, and decided to permanently move back to Netherlands to be closer to his mother.

Messaoud told the Excelsior website after signing his two-year deal in Rotterdam, “My father died in April and my mother is still finding it extremely difficult. My family is everything to me, so I want to be there for her.

“The last six months I played for NEC, and now I wanted to return permanently to the Netherlands. She is also very happy. There were several clubs interested, but the choice for Excelsior is the best for me.”

Messaoud started his career with AZ, but only made one Eredivisie appearance before joining Willem II, where he spent two years. In 2015 he left for Vaduz before joining NEC on loan last January.
