Twente’s unbeaten start to the season is over after they were beaten 2-1 by Excelsior in Rotterdam.

excedkndjfnfjTwente went into the match having not tasted defeat in their opening nine matches, and they went ahead after only two minutes when Luc Castaignos raced onto Hakim Ziyech’s pass before rifling a shot into the top corner.

The lead only lasted 15 minutes though as Tom van Weert fired past Nick Marsman from close range after being left totally unmarked by the Twente defence. The away side could have been ahead once again before the break but Jesus Corona could only fire over the bar when well placed.

Excelsior started the second half well and they were barely threatened by a disinterested looking Twente side. On 67 minutes the home side took the lead through Jeff Stans, who fired a cross from Adil Auassar past Marsman from the edge of the six-yard box.

Twente pushed forward looking for the equaliser, but Castaignos couldn’t convert a header from point blank range, while Hakim Ziyech’s free kick on the edge of the box was tipped over the bar by Coutinho.

Excelsior held on for the three points which lifts them up to 12th in the table, while Twente drop to 8th after their first defeat.
