FC Twente’s fine start to the season continued on Sunday with a 3-1 victory over Utrecht.

There was a place in the Utrecht starting line-up for Bart Ramselaar after his transfer from PSV, but Oriol Busquets did not make his debut for the hosts.

FC Twente were the stronger team from the start with Aitor Cantalapiedra being denied by Maarten Paes and the post. In the 22nd minute, the Spaniard did find the net from the penalty spot after a handball by Willem Janssen was spotted by VAR. At the other end, Utrecht were furious that VAR did not award a penalty after a foul on Leon Guwara.

At the break, John van den Brom took off Patrick Joosten, and brought on striker Adrian Dalmau. That change paid off on the hour mark, as Dalmau equalised after being set up by Issah Abass.

FC Twente regained their lead eight minutes later as Haris Vuckic netted his third goal of the campaign after being found by Calvin Verdonk.

In injury time, Guwara was sent off for bringing down Aitor in the box and the Spaniard netted his second penalty of the match to seal a 3-1 victory.

FC Twente now rise to 3rd with the win while Utrecht are 8th.
