twe stadiumFC Twente have been looking down into the abyss since Friday, when the Dutch court sided with the KNVB in their lawsuit. The decision potentially means that FC Twente are relegated, a final appeal is pending and a decision expected this Friday, but if the club are relegated then insolvency remains the most likely outcome. The club owes millions to creditors who based their loans on the assumption that the club would remain in the Eredivise.

The Tukkers feel that little help is forthcoming from the KNVB or other Eredivise teams and, following the defeat in court, holds out little hope of success in any appeal.

Therefore, the club is looking for a last resort, should relegation be confirmed, with Bundesliga emerging as a potential destination. According to De Telegraaf, FC Twente have examined the option of starting again in Germany’s third division or merging with a Bundesliga two side, who are financially sustainable, allowing FC Twente to survive in some form.

With the stakes so high, no option is off the table. Whatever happens on Friday, FC Twente will be transformed forever…
