The 27-year-old has eleven caps for the Dutch national team and was part of the Netherlands squad that finished third at the 2014 World Cup. However, despite playing week in week out in the Premier League with Swansea, his last cap came three years ago.

Speaking to Elf Voetbal, Fer said, “I have not heard anything from Zeist. No, you will not be called as long as you do not belong to the final selection. They do not call to ask how it is.”

Stoke City’s Erik Pieters has bemoaned his snub from the national team and Fer understands his complaints, “He plays every match at Stoke City, against top clubs like Chelsea, Arsenal, United and City, in which you experience more resistance than in the Eredivisie. Why would not you be good enough for Orange?

“I do not like to blame, but like Erik, I play weekly in the biggest league of the world, in my opinion not unworthy. “
