Feyenoord dominated the Klassieker in Rotterdam but failed to take any of their chances and were punished as an efficient Ajax came away with a 1-0 victory.

van rhijn ssbAfter Thursday’s defeat to Sevilla in the Europa League Feyenoord coach Fred Rutten made a number of changes to his side and picked Colin Kazim Richards to start up front in an attacking line-up.

The changes seemed to work as Feyenoord began the game on top with the bar rattled twice in the first four minutes through both Jordy Clasie and Ruben Schaken.

However out of nothing Ajax had the lead. The Amsterdammers were awarded a free-kick forty yards from goal and right back Ricardo van Rhijn curled a terrific effort over the wall and into the top corner past a stranded Kenneth Vermeer.

The woodwork came to Ajax’s rescue again minutes after the goal with Sven van Beek’s header rebounding off the bar, while Colin Kazim Richards inexplicably side footed wide from only a few yards out. Ajax could have doubled their lead before the break but Vermeer denied Anwar El Ghazi with a flying save and from the resulting corner Kolbeinn Sigthorsson headed wide.

Feyenoord continued to dominate possession in the second half but it wasn’t until the last ten minutes that they troubled Jasper Cillessen. After wriggling through the defence Elvis Manu set up Mitchell Te Vrede, but the striker could not finish from a few yards as Van Rhijn and Cillessen stopped the ball on the line. Cillessen then denied Te Vrede’s header from close range to claim all three points for Ajax.

The champions now move back up to 2nd but are three points behind PSV while Feyenoord’s poor start to the season continues and they slip to 15th.
