After the confidence boosting win over Go Ahead Eagles at the weekend, Feyenoord began the match on top, and they should have been ahead going into the break, but Elvis Manu missed two great chances. After Jordy Clasie’s shot was stopped, Manu failed to net with the rebound, while the forward also sent a close range header wide of the goal.
It wasn’t only Manu who saw chances go begging, Jens Toornstra and Colin Kazim Richards also came close for the home side, while at the other end Kenneth Vermeer had to keep out Jeff Louis clever lob.
Two minutes into the second half Feyenoord finally had the lead as Miquel Nelom’s long throw into the box was glanced over Eiji Kawashima by defender Sven van Beek’s subtle header
On 65 minutes Standard found the equaliser when van Beeks attempted clearance deflected into the path of Jonathan Viera, who lifted the ball over Kenneth Vermeer and into the net. Scottish striker Tony Watt missed a great chance to give the Belgian’s the lead minutes later, and they were eventually made to pay by Manu.
With six minutes left on the clock the ball fell at the feet of Manu in the box and the winger made no mistake with a right footed shot which flew into the net to hand Feyenoord all three points. The winning goal was just what Feyenoord deserved for their undoubted dominance of the game and shows that the confidence is returning to De Kuip after a difficult start to the season.
After beating Feyenoord in the last round of matches Spanish side Sevilla could only draw 2-2 with Rijeka, which means they are now one point ahead of both Standard and Feyenoord, who have three points each.
