Nicolai Jorgensen netted his first ever hat-trick as Feyenoord hammered AZ Alkmaar in Rotterdam.

The visit of AZ had the makings of a difficult tie for the league leaders, but they banished memories of the defeat to Sparta last week with an excellent performance.

After 12 minutes it was 1-0 for the hosts with Jorgensen sliding an excellent through ball by Rick Karsdorp into the bottom corner. Ten minutes later, Jens Toornstra made it 2-0 with a lovely strike past Tim Krul after a silky team move.

Feyenoord could have added more before the break, but Krul saved a strike by Steven Berghuis and Jorgensen couldn’t net from the rebound. Eventually, Dirk Kuyt made it 3-0 before the hour mark, blasting Jorgensen’s lay-off past Krul.

Derrick Luckassen pulled one back for AZ three minutes later, but there was to be no comeback as Jorgensen added his second from the penalty spot, before he completed his hat-trick with a calm finish on 82 minutes. In injury time, Wout Weghorst found himself through on goal and he slotted in another consolation for AZ.

The victory gets Feyenoord’s charge towards the title back on track and they remain four points ahead of Ajax. AZ slide to 6th.
