Feyenoord are still top of the table after a 6-1 victory over local rivals Sparta Rotterdam in De Kuip on Sunday. 

fey-spar-dThe hosts went on the attack from the start but Sparta’s defense held firm until Tonny Vilhena broke the deadlock on 24 minutes. The midfielder won the ball from Kenneth Dougall just outside the box and sent a fierce strike into the bottom corner.

Just before the break, it was 2-0 as Rick Karsdorp found Jens Toornstra with a backheel and the midfielder lashed a dipping volley over Ryan Korsmit from outside the area.

After the break, Feyenoord ran riot. Nicolai Jorgensen tapped in a third on 59 minutes, before the Dane added another shortly after with a low drive from the edge of the box, On 73 minutes Eric Botteghin headed in a fifth from a corner.

Sparta got themselves a consolation through Thomas Verhaar, but Eljero Elia capped off the rout in the 90th minute, finding the bottom corner after being teed up by Miquel Nelom.

The victory keeps Feyenoord top and gives them lots of confidence heading into the Europa League tie against Fenerbahce. Sparta are in tenth.
