Sevilla went into the match as group leaders and with memories of easily beating Feyenoord in the reverse match earlier in the group. However Feyenoord were a determined team and they stifled their opponents from the start, with Sevilla unable to create a chance of note in the first 45 minutes, while the home side came close from a long range Jordy Clasie effort.
Ten minutes into the second half Feyenoord had the lead, as Jens Toornstra fired in from close range after great work from Jean Paul Boetius in the box. Boetius then missed a fantastic chance to make it 2-0 twelve minutes later, while Sevilla had a goal disallowed for offside.
De Kuip was rocking, and the fans erupted once again seven minutes from time as Karim El Ahmadi sealed the win for Fred Ruttens side with an excellent half volley from outside the box.
Feyenoord are into the knockout rounds, and also climb above Sevilla into top spot and they can seal first place in the group if they can beat the already eliminated Standard Liege in two weeks.
What a night in Rotterdam.
A great win for the lads. I think it shows how much progress the team has made since the start of the season and what can be done with a solid defensive unit. Fred Rutten should take huge credit for this and with the addition of a decent goalscorer – who knows what we could achieve?
