Feyenoord have failed to seal the Eredivisie title after they were hammered 3-0 by local rivals Excelsior.

Rotterdam was at a standstill on Sunday morning as the city prepared for Feyenoord to lift their first Eredivisie title since 1999. De Kuip was almost full with expectant fans waiting to see their side win and then head back to their own stadium to lift the Eredivisie Schaal.

Nobody expected Excelsior to spoil the party, but Feyenoord’s local rivals proved to be party poopers in stunning fashion. Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s were strangely sluggish from the start and Excelsior made them pay with three quick-fire goals in the second half.

Nigel Hasselbaink opened the scoring on 56 minutes before Stanley Elbers tapped in another moments later. Van Bronckhorst threw on Dirk Kuyt but the veteran was barely on the pitch before Ryan Koolwijk curled in a third.

Feyenoord could find no way back and they head into the final game of the season against Heracles next weekend only one point ahead of Ajax.

What was supposed to be a massive day of celebration for Feyenoord fans ended up being a nightmare and they must wait to end their 18 year wait for the title.
