Sparta Rotterdam will take part in the relegation playoffs after a 3-1 defeat to Feyenoord in De Kuip.

Sparta lost 7-0 in the reverse fixture earlier in the season but went into Sunday’s Rotterdam derby knowing a win would give them a chance of escaping the bottom three.

Feyenoord thought they had taken the lead early on when Nicolai Jorgensen netted but the goal was wrongly ruled out for offside. After that, the visitors grew in confidence and went close through both Robert Muhren and Thomas Verhaar before Fred Friday broke the deadlock on 33 minutes.

In first-half injury time, Steven Berghuis headed in the equaliser to ensure both sides went into the break level.

In the second half, Feyenoord proved too strong with Frederik Holst poking the ball into his own net on 65 minutes before Berghuis netted his second to wrap up the win late on.

Sparta will now finish 17th and will have to take part in the end of season play-offs.
