Eric Botteghin saw red for Feyenoord in the first half but the Rotterdammers held on for a 1-1 draw against Zorya in Ukraine.

fey-zorya-botFeyenoord went into the game top of Group A and they took the lead after only 15 minutes with Nicolai Jorgensen heading in a cross from Dirk Kuyt.

After the goal, Feyenoord were comfortable but just before the break the game turned on its head. A second yellow card in the space of a minute saw Eric Botteghin sent off and his handball in the box earned Zorya a penalty. Brad Jones kept out Rafael Forster’s spot kick but he couldn’t prevent the Brazilian netting on the rebound.

The hosts controlled the second half with the extra man and Feyenoord were relieved to see the offside flag prevent Vladyslav Kulach while  Ivan Petriak was denied a penalty. Feyenoord defended deeply but they could have snatched a victory through Marko Vejinovic late on but the midfielder fired a good chance over the bar.

The draw sees Feyenoord drop behind Fenerbahce on goal difference, while Manchester United are one point behind in third. If Feyenoord beat Manchester United at Old Trafford in the next round of matches they will confirm their place in the next round.
