Feyenoord finally returned to winning ways on Saturday evening as Steven Berghuis inspired them to a 2-0 victory in the Euroborg against Groningen.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side went into the game on a five-match winless run in the Eredivisie and were coming up against a Groningen side buoyed by their 4-2 win over Vitesse last weekend.

The first chance fell to the hots on five minutes when Tom van Weert was played through on the left, and the striker cut inside before forcing Brad Jones into a save. The rebound came to Ritsu Doan but he couldn’t direct his header on target.

Feyenoord then grew into the game and Todd Kane had to clear a Renato Tapia header off the line before Tonny Vilhena and Sam Larsson both wasted great chances as Groningen held on heading into the break.

Four minutes into the second half, Feyenoord led thanks to Steven Berghuis who danced his way into the box before poking a shot at goal, which Sergio Padt could only parry into the path of Vilhena who tapped into the net.

Miquel Nelom made a great last ditch challenge to stop Juninho Bacuna a clear sight of goal, before Oussama Idrissi floated a cross just wide. Groningen threatened but Nicolai Jorgensen then sealed victory for Feyenoord, latching onto a Berghuis backheel before clipping the ball over Padt and into the net off the post.

Mike te Wierik hit the bar for the hosts late on, who also had a Lars Veldwijk goal disallowed. The victory lifts Feyenoord above PEC Zwolle and into fourth, while Groningen are 13th.
