After getting knocked out of the KNVB Cup and drawing with Twente at the weekend, Feyenoord were looking for a big three points in their battle to finish second. However, they were coming up a confident Groningen side, who were looking to close the gap on Feyenoord in fourth to one point.
Groningen created some good chances in the first-half but Nick Marsman was in good form to deny Tomás Suslov and then a header from Jørgen Strand Larsen. Gabriel Gudmundsson could also not find the net from close range.
At the other end, Sergio Padt saved from Orkun Kökçü, while Luis Sinisterra hit the post from close range.
In the second half, Feyenoord dominated but Sinisterra saw a header cleared off the line. The woodwork also denied both Bryan Linssen and Sinisterra again.
Dick Advocaat decided to leave Nicolai Jorgensen and Lucas Pratto on the bench as Robert Bozeník came on for the last ten minutes. However, he could not help the visitors find the net as Groningen held on for a point.
Feyenoord remains fourth and they are seven points behind PSV Eindhoven. Groningen sits sixth.
What can you expect from a demoralized team? Players are asked to take a pay cut while upper management is incapable of controlling their spending. Buying an over the hill player that rides the bench is just one exsample. Not selling players that are incapable of finding the goal is another. And just how hard do you play for a manager that has announced his retirement?
