Fortuna Sittard sealed a slender 1-0 win over Groningen on Saturday to pull themselves away from the bottom three.

Groningen headed to Limburg full of confidence with the club last tasting defeat back on the 28th of September.

Before kick-off there was a tribute to the late Pim Verbeek, who acted as head coach for both sides. When the game got underway, Fortuna Sittard had the better of the first half but they could not find a way past Sergio Padt.

The second half was a dull affair and it seemed the game was heading for a 0-0 draw. However, in the 78th minute, Padt kept out a Mark Diemers effort but could do nothing to prevent Rasmus Karjalainen slotting in the rebound.

That proved to be the only goal of the contest. Fortuna now rises to 13th in the table while Groningen are 10th.
