The Netherlands international has been without a club after having his contract with Stoke City cancelled earlier this year.
Afellay, who spent 14 years at PSV before joining Barcelona in 2010, has now returned to Eindhoven to work on his fitness.
PSV technical manager John de Jong told the club’s website, “Ibrahim grew up here and broke through, then he became a defining player in various champion teams, and it is only logical for us to help him where possible.”
Afellay will train individually with a PSV physio and there is no indication that the club will be offering a deal to the 32-year-old at the moment.
