Frenkie de Jong had a mixed game as Barcelona defeated Real Sociedad on penalties to reach the Spanish Super Cup final.

Ronald Koeman was without Lionel Messi for the semi-final but Barcelona took the lead in the 39th minute through Frenkie de Jong. The Dutchman brilliantly headed in an Antoine Griezmann cross to make it 1-0

It was De Jong’s third goal in nine games and had Barcelona ahead going into the break.

However, in the 50th minute, De Jong was penalised for a handball in the box and Mikel Oyarzabal equalised from the penalty spot.

The game would eventually go to extra time and then penalties. Oyarzabal missed Real Sociedad’s first spot-kick before De Jong stepped up and hit the post. However, Barcelona would go on to win the shootout and book their place in the final.

On Sunday, Barcelona will face Real Madrid or Athletic Bilbao for Ronald Koeman’s first piece of silverware since taking charge of the club.
