Cody Gakpo scored the only goal of the game as PSV Eindhoven came away from Heerenveen with a 1-0 victory.

PSV were looking to continue the confidence shown in their easy win in Zurich during midweek but they had not won in Friesland for eleven years.

Heerenveen have proved to be defensively solid this season and they frustrated the visitors in the early stages. Amin Sarr even had the chance to give the hosts the lead but he was denied by Walter Benitez.

Ibrahim Sangare hit the crossbar for PSV with a deflected strike before Andries Noppert made an excellent save to deny Yorbe Vertessen. The Belgian forward and Ismael Saibari both had to be substituted before the break due to injuries. Erick Gutierrez and Anwar El Ghazi came on.

El Ghazi almost opened the scoring in the second half but Noppert denied his free-kick. The hosts then continued to frustrate PSV with Xavi Simons getting particularly annoyed by persistent fouling.

PSV were struggling offensively but with 15 minutes left, Cody Gakpo got them the victory. After latching onto a flick from Joey Veerman he burst through a challenge and fired the ball past Noppert.

PSV get their first win in the Abe Lenstra Stadion since 2011 and they remain third. Heerenveen is in 8th.
