PSV Eindhoven needs to come from behind next week if they are to reach the Champions League group stages. Benfica prevailed 2-1 in Lisbon.

PSV have had an excellent start to the campaign but they found themselves behind after 10 minutes with Rafa Silva passing Joel Drommel with a strike into the far corner.

Eran Zahavi had the ball in the net as PSV looked for an equaliser, but the striker was offside. Cody Gakpo then went close but Odisseas Vlachodimos made a good save.

PSV was looking stronger but before the break, they fell 2-0 down as Julian Weigl doubled the host’s lead from close range.

Marco van Ginkel went close early in the second half before Gakpo did make it 2-1 in the 51st minute. The winger dribbled forward and found the far corner with a wonderful finish.

PSV then went forward looking for the equaliser but it did not come despite chances for Gakpo and Mario Gotze. Lucas VerĂssimo was also close to scoring an own goal.

It is a slender win for Benfica but PSV still has an excellent chance in the second leg next week.
