The 54-year-old had been in charge of the club since December 2014 but was given his marching order on Tuesday.

Verbeek said on his dismissal, “I am not surprised and I could see it coming to be honest. It is better to take such a decision after a few weeks rather than waiting for results to improve.

“If you do not trust one another then it is better to go your separate ways in a neat and dignified manner.

“In my first full season we finished 5th playing attractive football but last season due to many injuries we could not push on.

“I really enjoyed my time at the club during the last 2 and a half years and I do not blame the club at all.”

Verbeek has previously managed such clubs as Heerenveen, Feyenoord, AZ Alkmaar and German club Nürnberg.
