Groningen have climbed up to eighth after a slender 1-0 victory over Excelsior in the Euroborg.

Its been a hard week for Excelsior, who lost for the fifth time in a row in midweek before Adrie Poldervaart stepped down as head coach. André Hoekstra took charge as Excelsior looked for some much-needed points.

The home side were in good form and understandably they dominated from the start but Kaj Sierhuis messed up their big chance of the first-half.

After the break, Excelsior improved and Jurgen Mattheij almost made it 1-0 with an effort which went just wide. Groningen boss Danny Buijs intervened and made a double change which included bringing on Paul Gladon.

The striker netted the winner in Groningen’s 1-0 win over De Graafschap in midweek and was once again the hero on Saturday. Amir Absalem’s cross found Gladon and he fired into the far corner.

Excelsior couldn’t find an equaliser before the end and slipped to their sixth straight loss. They are still only one point above the drop zone, while Groningen climbs to eighth, which could be enough for a European playoff spot.
