Helder was signed at Arsenal by George Graham in 1995 but was still at the club when Wenger took over a year later, before leaving for NAC Breda in 1997.
Helder said, ”Arsene Wenger was innovative at Arsenal. He started to change things in a very small way at Arsenal. After training at the hotel there was an opportunity for the players to have acupuncture.
”In the beginning, Arsenal players had their doubts but in the end, they were very happy because they became more and more fit.
”When Arsene Wenger first arrived at Arsenal I was at the club. I was loaned at to Benfica and I arrived back at the club having sustained a serious injury. He spoke to me and even said about the opportunity of me going to play in France and that he would make some calls and put in a good word for me.
”I have always had respect for Arsene Wenger and it is a shame that he leaves Arsenal in the current climate. I went to watch an Arsenal match last year as I was invited by the club. I saw some supporters had so much had for Arsene Wenger. It was as if they had all forgotten what he has achieved at the club. ”
