The away side were denied a goal within the first two minutes, as Mike Havenaar failed to find a way past Elroy Room from close range.
The home side then enjoyed a spell of possession, with Marnix Kolder coming close to the opener from a free-kick.
On 35 minutes Go Ahead Eagles were reduced to ten men, and conceded a penalty when Deniz Turuc was adjudged to have brought down Mike Havenaar in the box. Lucas Piazon stepped up and sent Room the wrong way to make it 1-0.
Five minutes later, Vitesse were awarded another penalty when Piazon’s shot struck the arm of Van der Linden. This sparked violent scenes around the ground, with missiles being thrown on the pitch, and referee Danny Makkelie led the teams off the pitch for a ten minute break until the crowd calmed down.
When play resumed, Piazon once again smashed the ball in from the penalty spot to make it 2-0 to the visitors at the break.
In the second half Vitesse continued to dominate with the extra man, and sealed the win on the 65th minute, when substitute Gael Kakuta turned his defender before calmly slotting into the net.
A match which will be dominated by the referee’s two penalty decisions, but Vitesse were comfortable throughout and deserved the win.
