Go Ahead Eagles could not find the win that would have guaranteed their safety in the Eredivisie as they were beaten 2-0 by Heerenveen.

finnbogason dThe home side made a promising start, and came close to opening the scoring within the first five minutes when Marnix Kolder headed wide from eight yards.

Heerenveen grew more dangerous as the first half went on, and ten minutes before the break Joost van Aken, who was making only his second start for the club, rose to head in a corner, and give his side a 1-0 lead at the break.

Go Ahead pushed for an equaliser early in the second half, but Heerenveen keeper Kristoffer Nordfeldt twice denied Erik Falkenburg with fine saves, while Xander Houtkoop fired just wide from a tight angle.

With 15 minutes remaining Alfred Finnbogason doubled Heerenveen’s lead with a close range finish from Bilal Basacikoglu’s ball across the goal.

Bart Vriends summed up Go Ahead’s night when he managed to scoop over the bar from a few yards out in the last minute of the game, as Heerenveen held on for the 2-0 win.

The loss means Go Ahead are still seven points ahead of third bottom RKC, who still have three games left, while Heerenveen remain in 6th place.
