Utrecht got off to a perfect start as midfielder Cedric Babjeck finished from point blank range after Tommy Oar’s ball across the goal.
However the home side equalised ten minutes later with Jeffrey Rijsdijk poking home in front of goal after a cutback left Robbin Ruiter stranded.
With 17 minutes left Go Ahead were awarded a penalty for a foul by van der Maarel, and Nick van der Linden made no mistake from the spot to make it 2-1.
Rijsdijk should have made it 3-1 for the hosts minutes later, but after a fine dribble his low shot was excellently kept out by Ruiter’s leg.
Yassine Ayoub came close to an equaliser in the final minute but his header from a corner was straight at Eloy Room.
The three points lifts Go Ahead Eagles into the top 10, while Utrecht may slip down to 8th by the end of the round.
