Alfons Groenendijk now knows how big a task he has as ADO Den Haag boss as he watched his new side lose 3-1 at Go Ahead Eagles in a relegation six-pointer.

Groenendijk was named as the new ADO Den Haag coach last week as a replacement for Zeljko Petrovic. His task is simply to keep the club in the Eredivisie but that became much harder after a damaging defeat in Deventer.

Go Ahead Eagles began the game brightly and deservedly took the lead on 37 minutes when Ernestas Setkus failed to claim a Jarchinio Antonia cross and the ball hit Sam Hendriks thigh and disappeared into the net. Ten minutes into the second half another error in the ADO defence gifted the hosts and Hendriks a second as he took advantage of an error by Tom Beugelsdijk.

Hendriks was on for a hat-trick when he raced through on goal, but he was taken down just outside the box by Setkus. The goalkeeper saw red and defender Dion Malone spent the last fifteen minutes under the bar.

Despite going a man down, ADO didn’t give up and they pulled a goal back from the penalty spot through Abdenasser El Khayati, after a handball by Rochdi Acenteh. However, Go Ahead Eagles then sealed their victory as Marcel Ritzmaier spotted Malone off his line and chipped the ball from distance into the net.

Go Ahead Eagles now rise off the bottom and into 14th place. ADO Den Haag are now bottom.
