Go Ahead Eagles ended a four game winless streak by defeating AZ Alkmaar 2-1 in Deventer on Saturday night.

antonia fThe home side started the game strongly, but had to wait until the 36th minute to take the lead with Doke Schmidt firing an unstoppable 30-yard strike into the top corner to make it 1-0.

AZ Alkmaar pushed hard in the second half in an attempt to find an equaliser, but Roy Beerens wasted their best chance six minutes before the end as he slipped before connecting with shot, and the ball went wide.

Two minutes later Go Ahead counter attacked with Jarchinio Antonia racing clear before rounding Esteban and tapping the ball towards the net, and although Johan Gudmundsson was on the line he could not prevent the goal, which made it 2-0.

In stoppage time Fernando Lewis saw a header blocked by Jop van der Linden, before Roy Beerens netted a consolation goal for AZ with a deflected effort from the edge of the box.

Go Ahead move up one place to 12th with the win, while AZ slip to 7th.
